Tangled: The Series & Big Hero 6: The Series – The Rundown
Updated: Apr 10, 2020
My original idea was to review the Tangled series once the entire thing had aired – the only problem is, it never finished airing! It started in March and 16 Episodes later, it’s still going! So to celebrate the start of the Big Hero 6 series releasing this week, I’ve decided to give everyone a little glimpse into both series and list the similarities and differences compared to their movie counterparts.
One final note before we get into this, this blog post will be a little unfair considering I’ve watched all 16 episodes and the TV movie of the Tangled series however I’ve only watched the TV movie of the Big Hero 6 series and that’s simply because that’s all that’s been released as of now. But I’m so excited to finally be talking about these series so let’s just do the best with what we’ve got so far!
Let’s start with what everyone initially worries about when it comes to TV adaptations of their favourite films, who’s still in it?! Unless stated, the original voice actors from the movies reprise their roles.
Tangled: the series:
Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert
Queen Arianna (Rapunzel’s mother)
King Fredric (Rapunzel’s father)
Most of the pub thugs (excluding Hook Hand, I guess Disney’s TV budget couldn’t afford Brad Garrett)
Big Hero 6: The Series (based on the first episode/TV movie only):
Heathcliff (Fred’s butler, remember him?)
Alistair Krei (speculation)
However there were a few voice actor changes for the series: Khary Payton has replaced Damon Wayans Jr. in the role of Wasabi and Brooks Wheelan replaced T.J Miller in the role of Fred.
Some New Faces
Of course with every TV show continuation new characters have to be added to keep the story interesting so let’s meet…
Cassandra – Rapunzel’s best friend, daughter of the captain of the guards and a Lady in waiting who has a real problem with Eugene.
Varian – Corona’s very own alchemist and one of Rapunzel’s new recurring friends.
Lady Caine – A new villain who has popped up in a couple of episodes however is yet to show her true wrath.
The King & Queen of Corona – I know technically, they showed up in Tangled however this time they have names, voices and personalities! It’s like meeting them for the first time.
Big Hero 6:
As briefly mentioned before, this is only based on the TV movie so there will be many more new characters introduced in this series, so far we have…
Professor Granville – Head teacher of San Fransokyo institute of technology.
A Change of Art
It’s immediately obvious that both of these TV series have taken a different approach to animation compared to their movie counterpart. The two now sport an adorable fluid 2D style, take a look at the comparison below:
Laying The Ground Work
A new trend that seems to keep popping up with new Disney Channel TV shows at the moment is a TV movie premiered before the series. Both Tangled: The Series and Big Hero 6: The Series have one as well as Disney’s latest DuckTales reboot. The reason for this is pretty much just to catch you up with what’s happened between the film and the new series. Take a look at the first 5 minutes of Tangled Before Ever After and a sneak peak at Big Hero 6: Baymax Returns.
One of the most exciting parts of a new series is sometimes the intro and neither Big Hero 6 the series or Tangled the series disappointed, you can watch both intros below:
That pretty much sums up the basics of both series. Tangled: The Series is currently airing on Disney Channel and Big Hero 6: The series is currently only made up of the TV movie: Baymax Returns however will begin airing on Disney XD in early 2018. What’s even better? Both series have been renewed for a 2nd season already!
Let me know what you think of both/either of these series in the comments of this post or through social media, my links can be found in the Socials tab of my blog and check out my other posts on nerdoutwordout.com!
